Argentine U.N. Ambassador "It Takes Two To Tango: Solving The Malvinas/Falklands Islands Dispute"
October 6, 2010 · The New School, New York
The dispute over the Malvinas/Falklands Islands has recently resurfaced in the international arena. The renewed tensions over the Islands reveal the clearly opposing positions between Argentina and the United Kingdom. In light of this, the Observatory on Latin America (OLA) has invited the Argentine U.N. Ambassador Jorge Argüello to come to The New School and present on this issue.
The lecture will focus on the sovereignty dispute from a historical perspective and it will provide a unique opportunity to understand the roots of the continued confrontation. Ambassador Argüello will be introduced by Michael Cohen, director of the OLA, and there will be an open discussion with the audience after the lecture.

Presentation by Dr. Alicia Bárcena on the ECLAC report Time for Equality: Closing gaps, opening trails
November 1st, 2010· The New School, New York
The Observatory on Latin America (OLA) has invited Dr. Alicia Bárcena, Executive Director of the United Nations' Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), to present the conclusions drawn from the recent ECLAC report, Time for Equality: Closing gaps, opening trail, followed by high profile economists and media commentators.
This event will stress the lessons from dealing with the economic global crisis in Latin America. Such lessons rightly apply to rich countries as well, since Latin American economies are growing at about 5-6% this year while the United States and Europe are at much lower levels. Looking at unemployment rates, they have largely remained below 10% in Latin America while they have been at about 10% in the United States and reached as high as 20.5% in Spain.
The conference will be followed by a reception in the Orozco Room.

International Conference of the 2nd Call for Essays and Audiovisual Presentations
Mexico in 2011
At the International Conference, to be held mid-2011 in Mexico, the five award winners will present their work to a qualified academic panel from several countries in the region. These and those presented with honorable mentions will be included in the forthcoming book, Bicentenarios en Acción.
Unlike the 1st International Call, which included comparisons with the Centennial Commemorations in Latin American, this Call focuses only on the Bicentennials.
