President Néstor Kirchner Fellowship
Organized by the Observatory on Latin America OLA, The New School, New York, United States and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. This Fellowship is inspired by the legacy and achievements of former President Nestor Kirchner during his term as President of Argentina (2003-2007), coupled with his important work as the first Secretary General of UNASUR (2010). This Fellowship is aimed at the training of young leaders in Argentina and Latin America/South America. The Observatory on Latin America (OLA) of The New School, New York and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have joined together for this initiative. [...More]
Latin America on the Move: The Post Neoliberal Transition:
This program is a series of debates and encounters in New York among Latin American leaders in which they discuss the changes underway in their countries. Each year, the OLA brings together high-level political and societal leaders (press, NGOs, business, culture) to present and discuss how the region is changing, the constraints, and opportunities which these changes face. In these conferences, there is an intensive search for alternative approaches to improve the lives of the people in Latin America after the evident failure of neo-liberal economic policies to generate sustained economic growth and social development. Building Latin American Bicentennials
The bicentennial commemorations of the starting of the movements that led to the national independence in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela in 2010; Uruguay, El Salvador and Paraguay in 2011, and several other countries in the next 15 years, offer an excellent opportunity for comparative and multidisciplinary action-research on how governments and civil society in these countries are constructing their bicentennial commemorations and how they use this historical moment to address urgent issues of social inclusion and institutional reform. Design and Development
Applied international, comparative and interdisciplinary research program bringing together faculty from social sciences and design to discuss alternative ways of development. This is a work in progress to develop an interdisciplinary program integrating the strengths and approaches of the social sciences with the disciplines of design and space in a comparative, international framework. It is in its way to define a specific, multi-year collaborative program, building on the strengths and experiences of the respective faculty and institutions. This South-South-North innovative collaboration includes 4 cities: Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Bombay and New York. Faculty and students from 3 university are already participating. In New York: Parsons The New School for Design, the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School for General Studies, and the New School for Social Research. in Buenos Aires: the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales and Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseno y Urbanismo, Universidad de Buenos Aires; and in Bangkok the Chulalongkorn University. Space in Honor of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo
The OLA along with The New School has been fortunate to take part in and honor the work of the Association of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. Through the University the Grandmothers have been awarded honorary degrees in light of their important struggle. The OLA has arranged for meetings between the leaders of the Association and students, so that the history and stories of the Grandmothers will be passed on to new generations and further disseminated throughout the world. The OLA looks forward to developing this relationship with the Grandmothers for future events focusing on their work in particular and human rights challenges in general throughout Latin America.
