Michael Cohen launches new book to a packed audience at The New School

dsc 1071On April 11, 2012 The OLA hosted a presentation of Michael Cohen's latest publication, Argentina's Economic Growth and Recovery: The Economy in a Time of Default, at The New School in New York. President of The New School opened the event, followed by Michael Cohen's presentation, and comments by Professors William Milberg and David Plotke of The New School. The event ended with a lively and engaging question and answer period. The presentation was well attended by New School students and faculty as well as guests from outside The New School.

President Van Zandt opened the evening and remarked that Mr. Cohen's book engages the economic, development and political science arenas in a new way, which demonstrates a necessary ability to think "outside the box". He showed great enthusiasm and support for the book and promised to pose challenging questions during the Q&A period.

Third PNK Fellow, Mauricio Santoro Rocha, advanced his research on democracy and foreign policy in Brazil during his two-week stay in New York

Mauricio Santoro Rocha, of Brazil, is a journalist and holds a Ph.D. in Political Science. He currently acts as Professor of the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Previously, he worked as a reporter for the O Globo newspaper, and as a consultant for various NGOs and the Brazilian government. Furthermore, he was an international aid worker for the Instituto Brasileño de Análisis Social (IBASE), and worked in the Ministry of Public Works, Industry and External Commerce and in the National Youth Council of the Presidential Secretary General. Mauricio is the author of the book, Contemporary Dictatorships (published in Portuguese), and of 20 academic articles and book chapters.

Mauricio was selected, along with Lucila Rosso and Erika Paredes Sánchez, as the Third President Néstor Kirchner Fellow (2011-2012). The PNK Fellowship consists of an exchange of ideas and experiences between the Fellows and New York City academics, politicians and social actors, during a two-week work stay at The New School.

Erika Paredes Sánchez, Second President Néstor Kirchner 2011-2012 Fellow, completed an intensive two-week stay at The New School

Erika Paredes Sánchez, of Ecuador, has a Masters in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID), in Geneva, and currently works for the government of Ecuador, with a focus on the Yasuní-ITT environmental initiative.

Previously, she worked in the Office of the United Nations Programme for Development in Quito as a Development Capacity and Assistance Effectiveness consultant, and as Analyst for the Monitoring and Evaluation Program. She is co-author of the book, The Application of PNUD/ART Methodology Governance and Local Development in Latin America.

Erika Paredes Sánchez dedicated her two weeks at The New School to deepening her research on The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) at the onset of a socio-regional integration, an organization of which Néstor Kirchner was Secretary General.

"Buenos Aires. The Power of Anticipation" selected book of the year

tapa-gutmanThe Argentine newspaper La Nación included Margarita Gutman's Buenos Aires. The Power of Anticipation on its "books of the year" list. The daily newspaper noted that there is nothing more entertaining than considering the various ways in which the future was conceived in the past: "In this lavishly illustrated volume, the researcher Margarita Gutman shows how the future Buenos Aires was imagined in the early twentieth century."

This is the first book that comprehensively examines the imagination of the urban future in Buenos Aires. At the time of the Centennial, its people imagined and consumed a large and exciting set of images, desires, plans and expectations for the future of the city.

First President Néstor Kirchner Fellow successfully completed an enriching two-week stay at The New School

Lucila Rosso has completed a working stay of two-weeks at The New School. During this period, the first President Néstor Kirchner Fellow had the invaluable opportunity to present and discuss her research with the New School community, exchange ideas with professors from other universities and visit institutions based in New York City.

Rosso's research reveals the linkages between economics and politics in the history of Brazil and Argentina's respective paths of development. She holds a Law degree from Universidad de Buenos Aires and is a Masters in International Relations and Negotiations candidate from the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), Universidad de San Andrés and Universidad de Barcelona. She worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Security Ministry and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
